This intriguing dystopian adventure's depiction of the stand this strong female protagonist takes against the horrors of her world is fast-paced, compelling, and un-put-downable.

Once again, the worldbuilding is superb, the characters fully fleshed out and intriguing, the battles riveting, and the edge-of-the seat suspense compelling. Teens looking for a well-written dystopian adventure with steampunk elements in the magical machines created by the Architects will enjoy spending time with Lark and her companions.

An extremely entertaining tale of past, present and future leaving the question: where does humanity stand when the best laid plans backfire?

The Doldrums

Writers like writing about how hard it is to write. As a newly full-time writer myself, I’m constantly astonished by how tough it is. On the one hand, not having to get up and get dressed and drive in the traffic and sit at a desk and listen to the office chatter and so forth is pretty awesome. Getting to play video games whenever is pretty awesome. Dictating my own schedule and getting to do my grocery shopping midday is pretty awesome.

But on the other hand: writing is pretty hard.

Wisdomous Wednesday: Pursue Your Weaknesses

Wisdomous Wednesday is a weekly series of posts with advice about writing ranging from craft to navigation through the publishing world. If you have some wisdomous thoughts you’d like to share here, don’t hesitate to contact me. I love advice from other writers!

Knowing your weaknesses as a writer is pretty important. But I think it’s just as important not to get caught up in what you know (or believe) to be your flaws. I think a lot of writers (and I am WAY guilty of this myself) tend to avoid writing things they’re not good at, or have no experience with. I know I catch myself taking convoluted paths through stories to avoid writing things I know I’m not good at writing–or worse, avoid writing stories I otherwise love because there’s an aspect to them that I don’t think I can handle.

Transitions

Almost exactly one year ago, I got on a plane to fly to Australia. I had about 20,000 words of a new book, a lot of emotional baggage, and a metric ton of doubts. Not much to go on, really, but I knew I had to get moving on my dream of being a writer or I’d be waiting for something to happen to me forever.

Books That Make You Want to Quit

Do you ever finish reading a book and just want to throw it across the room and cry and never touch paper/keyboard again, because you’ll never be that good?  I was chatting the other day with my friend Caitlin about this–“So good you just want to kill yourself,” was the way she put it, though with her it’s film and animation and opera that gets her.  I always end up with this unbearable desperation when I read a book like that, this fury and passion bubbling up inside me where I want to dive into my chair and write until my hands fall off, and simultaneously move away and change my name and never think about writing again.

What inspires you to be inspired?

I think most writing blogs at some point do a post on inspiration. What inspires you? they ask, and I always love reading the answers. The ones that are similar to my own sources of inspiration make me feel like I’m part of a secret club of creative geniuses, and the ones that are different often introduce me to new methods of inspiration that I might not have even thought about.

But that’s not what this post is about.

Just look at yourself now…

I’ve been completely obsessed with this song ever since I first heard it.  It’s become a sort of inspirational song for me, when it comes to writing.  Usually, music inspires me in a very specific way — it’ll bring to mind a certain scene, or character, or mood I’m aiming to capture in a given story.  This song, however, just makes me want to write.  It’s about taking that beautiful mess inside and giving it life.

So here it is, for all those writers out there.  My inspirational song of the day!  Hopefully it’ll inspire you too!  Just make sure to turn that feeling to actual productivity.  Don’t be like me and sit staring off into a beautiful daydream for an hour until it fades.  I’ll post lyrics after the cut, if you want to read them.  They’re lovely.
